We're Zomaar Zomert. A small crew from Itterbeek that's been filling the field with music, beers and good company every last weekend of July for almost thirty years. Here's how it all started.
During the annual fair in Sint-Anna-Pede, the Zomaar youth club came up with an idea: throw their own party inside the fair. In July 1998 Zomaar Zomert was born. Small, local, for the neighbourhood.
The first editions were modest: a tent, a few bands, the neighbours stopping by for a pint. Year by year we grew along with the field. No grand gestures, just steady atmosphere. What started as a youth-club party slowly became a fixed summer date for Sint-Anna-Pede.
In 2009, Friday hosted an entire 'shelter night' with DJs spinning ragga, jungle and drum'n'bass. On Saturday, Zaki, Sax and the Smiley Beats Bruders took turns on stage. Sunday featured an open-air film screening on the field. An edition that showed there was room next to the schlager and pop for louder, more idiosyncratic sounds too.
In 2012 we set up a non-profit so we could build the organisation sustainably, transparently and professionally. From then on the line-up gained some lift. Names like Kate Ryan, 2Fabiola, Sam Gooris, Get Ready and Avalonn took our stage. None of that would have been possible without the steady support of our partners and the municipality of Dilbeek.
In 2020 the world hit pause. No tent, no pints, no music on the field. A strange summer for everyone, us included. Most of all a reminder that gathering and celebrating with the neighbours isn't a given. And how badly we wanted to do it all again.
Today the field still gets turned upside down for three days. Friday and Saturday bands on stage, Sunday paella and pétanque, and always free. We're still the same small crew: volunteers, villagers and a handful of loyal partners. And every summer, we're already thinking about how to make next year a little better.
